Data Protection Acts

The main Irish law working with data protection is the Data Protection Act 1988.  The 1988 Act was revised by the Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2003 – web edition.  A management merging (Web version) of the law is available here (pdf).

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into power on 25 May 2018, changing the current data protection structure under the EU Data Protection Instruction.

 As a regulation, it will not generally require transposition into Irish law (regulations have ‘direct effect’), so organizations associated with information systems of any sort need to take note the regulation details them straight in the responsibilities it enforces.
